Stimulant DJs "Legitimate Sounds" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. STIM12031
A - Legitimate Sounds

Having brought the global hard dance floor to its knees with the mighty 'Countdown' (single of the month in DJ Magazine and Upfront Magazine and featuring on numerous compilations worldwide) the Stimulants are back once again with yet another summer slammer! Steering into the heady realms of hard trance (UK style) the boys have put together another effervescent blend of block rockin' beats, huge heaven-sent roof-raising riffs and rollercoaster peaks and troughs, all of which are driven along by a throbbing and powerful bassline. This has been tried and tested across the land by a select few, all of whom have voiced a unanimous opinion: ANTHEM! The flipside welcomes Tidy starlet Paul 'Mad Dog' Maddox to Stimulant HQ for the first time and what a debut mix he's brought to the table. Showcasing his own approach to the UK Techno sound he strips the mix bare and reloads the drums and percussion to suit whilst chopping up the arrangement to bits in a cool cut 'n' paste fashion before throwing in a rather deadly 2-step breaks 'n' bass break down at the mid point to get the crowd hyped.

Stateless "Art Of State" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. FRCD7 / FRLP7
Following his two highly acclaimed EPs for Freerange comes the debut long player from Andreas Saag, musician / producer and all-round wunderkind. As those in the know will insist, Andreas productions always hit the spot, whether it be his Stateless productions for Freerange, his Swell Session stuff for Hollow or his jazzy edged techno for Samuel L. Sessions SLS label. His releases are bringing a new depth and quality to the nu jazz, house and electronica scenes. This album is a deep and soulful beauty that features the likes of fellow Gothenburg residents Yukimi Nagano (Koop), Elsa Hedberg and Jonatan Backelie as well as a whole host of other musicians. This predominantly song-based album oozes with good vibes and a depth that belies Andreass youth. Tracks such as All Of A Sudden and Too Late draw on the traditions of Scandinavian jazz music whilst pulling them kicking and screaming into the 21st century by fusing sublime songwriting and vocals with fat breaks and bass lines that move you. Other tracks such as Bringin Me down and Falling Into (now established as a Co-op classic!) show far more of a soulful side to Andreas productions, minimal and funky enough to move the dancefloor but keeping enough melody and harmony to entice even the most jaded of music lovers out there.

Bill Makris "Groove Me" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. EUHO049
A - Groove Me
B - Groove Me (Nils Hess remix)
Greek producer, Bill Makris, has formed a fresh house sound that sits between tribal and tech house. He can produce music right across the board which is why hes had releases out on the Plastic City label and LTJ Bukems Good Lookin label, and has just finished a remix for Steve Lawlers Harlem imprint. He also has several more releases planned on Eukahouse including an album project. Groove Me is a tough house track, bringing together elements from the tech house and tribal house scene to devastating effect. The A-side is a wicked driving groove, in an almost old-school progressive format, but with some wicked up to date synths and stabs. Flipped by Transient, which opts for a full on peak time layout, with driving drums leading the way through some ace atmospherics and builds. This is pure quality, peak time rocking stuff which will blow them away time after time.

Various "UK Hard Trance Vol. 4" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. 12HPOT28
A - Billy Daniel Bunter & Steve Blake - Understand
B - Ali Wilson & Carl Nicholson - Superstitious
The A side is hard UK trance of the anthem variety and the 2 artists at the helm say it all. Fast paced, huge break downs, catchy hooks and memorable vocals are the order of the day. The flip is the sound of the UK Hard Trance underground! On a deeper tip to the A side, this infectious track has got class written all over it. Tech-y beats and bass groove the track along to a huge trance break down and powerful kick in. Both tracks are massive wherever played.
|
Cass "Hootinanny" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. SABOTAGE004
A - Hootinanny
B - Mind Rewind (Satoshi Tomiie's Mind Blister mix)
This is a biggie. Oh, and theres a Satoshi Tomiie mix of Mind Rewind on the B-side which is pretty good as well. This is house music, twisted into all its variations by 2 exceptional producers. The A-side is a hybrid affair, with trippy house beats and a Juan Atkins techno feel. Key changing basslines and mad drops abound, this record is BIG but with a small b. On the B-side Satoshi Tomiie does what he does best, superlative driving chunky house music. Taking the key elements from Casss previous single on Sabotage Mind Rewind and adding his own distinctive flavour. This rocks hard.
|
Castelli, Chus & Ceballos "Quimera" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. FLUENT45
A - Quimera (Iberican mix)
B - Quimera (South American dub)
For those of you that dont know, these three Spanish fellows are The Boys. From the Stereo Productions stable and true to form, this journey of the 3Cs is a rough one, pounding bass waves all the way to tribal paradise. 3 major players all on one slab and the outcome is deadly: blazing percussive loops and horn riffs that summon the troops to the dance floor a simple but well thought out track that will pay dividends in the mix. Everybodys ranting about the big hands in the air housey monsters going off in Ibiza you need the odd tune that will bang on their heads and wake them up from their haze and this is it.

|
Nick Denton & Test Tube Babies "The Southside EP" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. THM062
A - Don't Stop
B - Wanna Funk
First up is Dont Stop, a tech tune that oozes drive and passion with its girly vocal complementing the hard synths and rounded bassline. The percussion is pretty straight-laced to give the track its marching rhythm that is sure to satisfy the palette of clubbers and DJs alike. The flip, Wanna Funk, is a bit dirtier than Dont Stop mainly because of the bassline that retains the menacing feel of the first track. The lead is even more tech edged than the first which gives the track most of its feel. The kick is almost tefal-flat in intonation which is a cool break from the norm.

Cevin Fisher "All My Friends" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. SUB94T
A - All My Friends (Eightball vocal mix)
B - All My Friends (CF's Freak Life orchestra dub)
This is one of the few releases from Subversive this year as the label boss takes a quiet sabbatical. Quality rather than quantity is the name of the game. The Summers here, time to roll the car roof back, put on the shades, turn up the stereo, and blast out this years coolest new cut. Cevin Fisher is back to rock the club floors and pump up the speakers. From the man who gave us the Ibiza classics The Freaks Come Out and Burning Up comes his latest slice of vinyl heaven, All My Friends. The A side features a fully funked-up, pounding, disco assault from Almighty remixers Jon Musgrave and Jono Buchanan already responsible for many No 1 Club Chart remixes this year. A slice of pure mainstream butt-wiggling, floor-tapping cool summer grooves. The flip side features the typical Cevin Fisher tough tribal workout that weve come to know and love. Julian & Fernando "The Warm Up" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. SHAB064
A - The Warm Up
B - What I'm Saying
Julian & Fernando's first release for Shaboom is a quality double A-sider that stands head and shoulders above the competition. The Warm Up builds around a gorgeous synth pad with crisp, driving drums that lock into a hypnotic groove. What makes this track special is the country music award acceptance speech that plays over the top and is an emotional tribute to God, music and 'everybody else who knows me' before she breaks down in tears, showing that a bit of imagination can bring a smile to everybody's face. On the flip, What I'm Saying toughens things up with live funk bassline and enough acid squiggles to keep any dancefloor in the zone.
|
Kava Kava "The Bank Job EP" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. CFA12006
A1 - Bank Job
A2 - Tic
B1 - Terrorists
B2 - Bank Job (Boyz From The Hudd mix)
Bank Job is party breaks vs. 70s psychedelic soul funk. With Kava Kava things are party tipped, funky yet sinister. The band let rip with a variety of squelchy grooves while Pat has space to prove hes funked up and freaked out: soulful on 'Terrorists', psychotic on 'Tic'. Kava Kava are a timely fix of old school, soul and blues influences over chunky beats and breaks, live guitar funk, lush bleeps, dirty bass synths and ass kicking grooves. DJ mag referred to their last EP as an outstanding funky challenge and with this belter of a 12, they are back once more to mess with your minds and feet.
|
Malik & Boombatcha "Sampler 2" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. FKA002
A - Malik - Basement Frequencies (Darko mix)
B - Boombatcha - Kotozen
Malik's 'Basement Frequencies' is a groovy workout from Darko, utilising all his trademark sounds. The groove is built up nicely before the bassline is rolled into action. The track continues to layer up with a nice use of pads before dropping out for the first time. Everything kicks back in Darko style and hooks are added through the main section and things are lifted right up before the drums are layered out to cleverly ease the track into its ending. Boombatcha's 'Kotozen' may be best described as funky techno although it has house and tech-house elements. Punchy production and an techno style drums are the order of the day whilst as crazy effected sample floats in and out to form the main groove. Just as you think the track is going in one direction some beautiful deep pads and synth hooks set the tome for the mood of this toe-tapping groover.
|
Medway "Trauma" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. REL011R1
A - Trauma
B - Trauma (Rob Curtis remix)
The original works an Ice-T vocal over the top of layer after layer of tight percussion. An acidy bassline rips away in the background as a whole host of samples float in and out over top. For good measure everything boils down into a dub reggae stepped breakdown with off-beat bass stabs. For the remixes of the track, the duty was turned over to the public for a remix contest. Three tracks were chosen. One of the three winning remixes is on the flip of this first disc. The mix comes from Vancouver native Rob Curtis and it's nothing short of stunning. Curtis stands tall with a tight progressive gem. He uses plenty of chords and subtle atmosphere to set the mood. Key changes form the melody of the mix while the sample cuts float around in a wash of reverb. A deep progressive ride that will appeal to all.

Rob Rives presents Tomorrow Ltd. "Standing Alone" Released 1.9.03 Cat No. HONM028
A - Standing Alone (Chris Lums' Lumifornia mix)
B - Standing Alone (Studio Nova retouch)
C - Standing Alone
D - Standing Alone (DJ Garth & Markie Mark mix)
'Standing Alone' is the first release under Honchos new distribution deal with Amato. Written and produced by Rob Rives, the man behind many a production by Francois K and Danny Tenaglia (as engineer) as well as countless projects himself, this double pack comes jam packed with killer remixes from the cream of the USA crop, namely Chris Lum, Mazi (Studio Nova) and DJ Garth and Markie Mark (AKA Rocket). 'Standing Alone' is a twisting, snaking balearic house moment. Its Spanish guitars and dubbed out vocals offset the dark feel to the rolling drums as hazy production. Rives, as always, keeps things slightly left of field, but this monster track is sure to find a home in the more salubrious nightclubs of this world. Chris Lums remix rolls with military-esque drum patterns, deep and sensual chords and a booming bassline, whilst Studio Novas mix keeps things jackin with enough bleeps and bounce to keep everyone happy. DJ Garth & Markie Mark round things up with a remix of true dub proportions. The reggae skank and digital drums make for a mix more in the vein of Adrian Sherwood or Andy Weatheralls dubbier moments, and is the perfect antidote to the pacey drums of the other mixes. A deep, chilled moment to be savoured.

A - It's Showtime
B - It's Showtime (The Spectacular One's Show Off mix)
Jules and Paul return again, donning their infamous VPL disguise to deliver a tough trancer with a melodic edge. The original mix builds up a pumping groove with sirens and a dark distorted bassline before the melody unfolds. Euphoric, but still tough enough for the Closet dancefloors. On the flip for those who like to add a bit of funky flavour to their music, newcomer The Spectacular One delivers a funky bass driven remix that will win over new fans for Closet.
