Washington "Sleaze" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. BUILT009
A - Sleaze
B - We-Me
Amato present the ninth release on Purpose Records due for release early April. Following on from a string of great releases last year from the likes of Tony Thomas, Justin Drake and Pop Out and Play, Purpose Records lay down another peak-time mover. This time its the turn of Washington, who will be know to many as Steve Lawlers sound engineer. Here he goes it alone and lets us enter his drum heavy world. The first cut is Sleaze and it lives up to its name. Looped out percussion lines kick the track off, weaving their way through dense layers of atmospherics and once some twisted vocals have been thrown in for good measure, its really off to a flying start. This drops into a super-sized bassline and the track lifts off again. On the flip is We-Me, and it keeps proceedings moving in a similarly bass-heavy way. Electro-styled synth hits come from all angles, with vocal cuts and percussive layers all adding to a great electronic groove. A dark female vocal hook builds with the track, dropping into a short solo break and even more grinding-and-soaring analogue goodness.
Both sides rock. Already had the X-Press 2 test! - Ashley Beedle / X-Press 2 (Various - Worldwide)
I really like this dirty groover. - Danny Howells (Various - Worldwide)

Riley & Durant "Candesco" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. RECOVER022

B - Candesco
Nick Riley is resident DJ at the world famous Gatecrasher, while Andi Durrant hosts his weekly Friday night show on Galaxy FM in the north of England, attracting 59,000 listeners every week compared to 29,000 listening in to Radio 1 at the same time in the same region (official RAJAR figures). Already a firm favourite with fellow Gatecrasher DJs Scott Bond and Matt Hardwick on CD-R, Candesco has been raising the roof for these guys at their gigs around the globe the past 6 weeks, making it an obvious choice on their next Gatecrasher compilation CD, as well as the forthcoming Recoverworld Live Vol 1 compilation. The new Wavestorm remix completes the package by adding a stomping German style remake, and has ensured this release is already making waves in both the cooler trance and hard trance circles.

Rollerball "Albinoni" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. ANJ012
A - Albinoni (Above & Beyond mix)
B - Abinoni (Super 8 mix)
Rollerball is a re-working of Albinonis Adagio in G Minor, the theme to cult movie Rollerball. This 12 package includes a mix from the much coveted Above & Beyond, plus a fine reworking by emerging Finnish producer, Super8. Viewed by some as a long overdue follow-up to Ferry Corstens legendary mix of Barbers Adagio, it was actually Above & Beyonds Tony McGuinness whod originally had the idea to make a dance mix of the piece while working at Warner Music as William Orbits A&R man. McGuinness had been doodling with both Barbers and Albinonis Adagios at home before giving up on his own version and calling in Ferry Corsten. But now as part of the Above & Beyond team the opportunity was there to give Albinoni a trance makeover and so McGuinness dug out the old files and got to work with fellow producers Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki. One fantastic reaction off CDR at Ministry of Sound later and the record was hastily being lined up for a release on Anjunabeats. Rollerball will be released internationally by Warner Music in Benelux, Avex in Japan and Blanco Y Negro in Spain.

John Whiteman vs Gaz West "Fantasy" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. HOTWAX025
A - Fantasy
B - 155
Hotwax reaches their respectable 25th release, and who better to have behind the controls than John Whiteman? This time he teams up with new artist Gaz West to give you two tracks in very different styles. Fantasy is more of a hard trance track with a driving off-beat bass and synth stabs running under tight percussion leading into the main break which is a lot more trancey than you would expect but works really well with unexpected key changes to keep it interesting. 155 is more on the hard house tip with a phat rolling bassline, crisp percussion and evil stabs. Then in the break it filters all the way as an evil main lead comes in with spooky key changes, definitely one for the harder floors. A mixed release with two different tracks to please a whole range of clubbers.

Agent Sumo "The Force" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. BRG055
A - The Force
B - The Force (Detroit Horns mix)

They recently relocated to New York where they recorded a series of forthcoming singles after months of legal wrangling trying to free themselves from their major label contract. The first track to see the light will be 'The Force', a dirty, distorted, big room house track that rocks in all the right places and features the vocal of Bronx based DJ Max Power and the live bass of New York bass player Barnaby Ladykiller. Ross Couch "Instant Access" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. BL062
A - Instant Access
B - Instant Access (DJ Lucca mix)
Rapidly maturing with every release, Glasgows Ross Couch is a discovery of Bellboy boss, Chris Cowie, who gave him his debut release on the label with 2002s Backforce / In Motion. Ross displays an intuitive knowledge of the workings of the deeper dancefloor, with a love of Detroit and the underground legacy of his hometown. Expect great things for his debut artist album, set for later in 2003. His third release for Bellboy, Instant Access sees Ross confirm his growing reputation as a name to watch among the UKs techno producers. A tough, funky builder that introduces murky, malevolent riffs to tightly coiled drums and vocal snatches, bringing the fear to tech-oriented dancefloors worldwide. Meanwhile, the delectable DJ Lucca of the Czech Republic adds her uniquely sexy, energetic spin on the remix. DJ Lucca has made remarkable strides considering shes only been DJing since 1999. Shes busy playing and promoting around Eastern Europe and beyond, sharing the bill with some of technos biggest names. Voted best newcomer by Bassline magazine in 2001, Lucca recently made her production debut on Bellboy with Mirage 01/Private Dancer.

Halogen & Castrillon "Gas" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. RETEK005
A - Gas (Sam Reeve remix)
B1 - Gas
B2 - Gas (Sam Reeve Diesel dub)
Having dared to be different with all the releases on the label to date, Retek continues the trend by giving a debut to Halogen & Castrillon. John Castrillon has worked as part of the Brighton based Banging Tunes collective in recent years, and as soon as they heard his groovy techno collaboration with Halogen they knew it was perfect Retek material. They've also called upon the services of label favourite Sam Reeve once again to provide a harder alternative, and would you believe it, hes come up with two mixes! His main remix features a full-on synth riff, while the dub remix is more of a groove driven affair for those that like to keep it minimal. If you need convincing about the waves Retek is making in the scene, heres what Nukleuz A&R Ed Real has to say about the label in the DJ Mag Issue 36 guest reviews:Retek are really pushing the boundaries of hard house, getting rid of the cheddar and taking it in a much more techno direction. Its something a lot of producers have been trying to achieve, but not very successfully. Retek is certainly leader of the pack.

Ingo "48 Hours" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. TIDY187T
A - 48 Hours
B - Song 14
Back in 2001 Ingo was famous for his 'off beat' madness and the huge hits 'Ready for Dis' and 'My House' which were followed up by 'Boom' and 'Move' later that year. On both of these releases the boy wonder sold in excess of 16,000 units, plus they went onto numerous compilations. Well, the young lad from Lincoln is welcomed back with open arms as he once more delivers two hot slabs of juicy, succulent hard house. '48 Hours' is 2003 hard house in it purest form. Solid production equals smiles on the dance floor. This baby has a nice vocal with a solid lead riff and has early support again from Anne Savage, Lisa Lashes, and The Tidy Boys. 'Song 14' is just sheer power on vinyl! Thunderous production from the wee man that will make your bones shake. Uplifting enough for the hard trance fans but hard enough also for the die-hards out there. Once again with early support from Lee Haslam, Anne Savage and The Tidy Boys, this track should win a lot of friends. These tracks feature on the forthcoming 'Music for the Harder Generation' album sampler, 20,000 copies to be distributed in the UK. Keep it Ingo!

Nick K "80s Ball" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. SOG018
A - 80s Ball
B - 80s Ball (Greed remix)
Chunkybigroomfloorfillingstuff. basically sums up this release in a nutshell. Pounding drums and heavy b-lines are the order of the day, this time coming from Nick K, one of the best exports at the moment to come out of Holland. The A-Side original mix, is a stab laced floor filler, complete with pounding bassdrums, sweeping washes and a wicked lead riff which is guaranteed to rock.. Flip it for Greeds reinterpretation, a massive big room progressive masterpiece, with rolling arpeggios, driving b-lines and an infectious lead hook which will send them wild. Production on both mixes is a tight as a nuns chuff. Essential release from the SOG stable, yet again!

Random Factor "Ltd. Edition Remix EP" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. VISLTD2
A - What I Need (Chicken Lips mix)
B1 - Know You're There (Silver City dub)
B2 - Without You (Freaks mix)
The 2020 Vision Ltd series is going to be a collectable series of choice tracks pressed in a limited amount and never repressed. They will appear for a short time in plain white inner sleeves with black and white labels. This is the first release, Random Factor - Ltd Ed Remix EP. Chicken Lips join the ranks of Silicone Soul, Volga Select and Silver City in getting their hands on the Random Factor classic and they have turned out a killer mix. They twist Carl's original into a spaced out, dirty analogue funk fest, up there with The Lips best remixes. The Silver City Dub mix of 'Know You're There' uses the same template of their vocal mix (VIS084), but loses most of the vocal and strips the track down to a big room, hypnotic anthem, a peak time winner. Finally The Freaks round the release of in some style. Currently riding high with their amazing 'The Man Who Lived Underground' album, they weave an unmistakable freaky jam under Debbie Clare's classy vocals, which can't fail to make you shake your booty. So, all in all a wicked remix package for the first release of this new series, but if you don't get in the first week of release you might well miss out.

Tony Thomas & Access 51 "People Of The World Unite" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. END051 / END051R
Disc 1:
A - People Of The World Unite
B - Into The Forest
Disc 2:
A - People Of The World Unite (Jon Carter vocal mix)
B - People Of The World Unite (Jon Carter instrumental mix)
Tony Thomas has been producing quality underground dance music for over 12 years, releasing tracks on Soma, Subliminal, Tango, Hooj Choons, Loaded, Eukahouse and a host of other seminal house labels. He first came to widespread attention as one half of The Producers and in particular with the universally acclaimed twisted groove Flying The Funky Path- originally released on End Recordings. A highlight of End Recordings recent Best Of album END050, in their album review Jockey Slut highlighted Flying The Funky Path as simply .2000 defining. Now Tony returns to End Recordings with People Of The World Unite/ Into The Forest 2 sides of dark edged tribal house recorded in collaboration with French / Portuguese production duo Access 58. Of the two, People Of The World Unite is the killer cited as one of the tips for Miamis Hottest Tunes in the March issue of Muzik magazine. Road tested over the last few months at The End, People.. is a raw house groove built on tough, tough beats overlaid with insistent, almost violent, tribal chanting. On remix duty comes Jon Carter, originally sent an early copy of People. after a listen to his overlooked but much loved tribal house comp Viva, Bugged Out!. Carters mix takes the beats & groove deeper but retains the sense of menace with intermittent flashes of the originals twisted chantsnhorns. This is the first release on End Recordings since the much lauded remix package of Layo & Bushwacka!'s Deep South, the label's fiftieth single release. With tracks of the quality of People Of The World Unite the next fifty releases look set to be as essential as the first.

Big room, chunky, funky, tech-house crossover stuff which will send 'em wild on the floor. Support has been phenomenal for this little beauty, with solid feedback coming from tech house and house heads alike. Deep basslines, hypnotic percussion and snippets of the lead vocal add up to become and essential floor filler.

Kava Kava "Maui" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. CFACD006
'Maui' by Kava Kava (Chocolate Fireguard/UK) features some willfull and joyfull plundering of the more raucous elements of dance, some classic disco string swipes and a definitively, defiantly arms-aloft attitude. The group, currently building a reputation as a genuinely live dance act, features the vocals of Pat Fulgoni alongside myriad bleeps and buzzes and fierce clattering beats. From the first notes of opener Intro it is clear that this is a act dedicated to the party vibe. Happily they also know how to write songs; 'Space People (A&rlien)' features some furious, grungy breakdowns and a fine chorus while 'Terrorists' is slower and funky with a rocky guitar part that lends a bigbeat feel to the proceedings. It also features an impassioned performance from Fulgoni and some Dexys style horns. Sicfuck is rock soul (with the emphasis on rock) while title track 'Maui' is a genteel, floaty tune, the closest the band come to a ballad, in fact, but with a tuff breakbeat. Overall an excellent, punchy record and a wake-up call of sorts.
Track Listing:
1. Intro
2. Don't Stop the Music
3. Space People (A&rlien)
4. Terrorists
5. Sicfuck
6. Maui
7. Bankjob
8. Swans
9. Funked Up and Freaked Out
10. Beats For Cheats
11. Tic

13. Faith

Jason Jinx featuring Paul Alexander "The First Time" Released 28.4.03 Cat No. FLUENT41
A - The First Time (Push mix)
B - The First Time (Jinx Pull mix)
Over 40 singles - and remixes - have come out of Jinx' studio for labels like Defected, Strictly Rhythm, Groove On, Eightball, Nervous, Ovum, and King Street to name a few. Recently a huge dance floor buzz picked out the track 'Bring Back That Feeling' on Subliminal. And under the moniker Joystick, Jinx has made a lot of noise on the Yoshitoshi label with cuts like 'Go Insane', 'Listen', and 'The Chelate EP', as well as his remixes of Eddie Amador's 'Rise', Mysterious People's 'Fly Away', and PQM's 'The Flying Song'. Creating tracks as a DJ crafts a set, Jinx plays with dynamics that build and build on the dance floor. It's a warm sound, but built around hard, supremely danceable beats, like 'Modulate'/'Can you relate?' on Moody Records, which has been making waves in clubs both sides of the Atlantic. Here Jason makes his Fluential debut with a truly slamming track, featuring the spoken word vocals of Paul Alexander. The original push mix is straight up house with a trippy edge, and is complemented by Alexander's hypnotic vocal. The Jinx Pull mix goes darker and deeper.

Byblos is one of Europes, if not the worlds, most prestigious hotels. Built on the highest hill in Saint-Tropez with a magical view over one of the most beautiful bays on the Riviera, it is an enchanting place where the international social elite gathers at this oasis of tranquillity and sophistication. The myth of Byblos is such that since it opened in 1967 the likes of Mick Jagger, Elton John, George Michael and Puff Daddy have all stayed their and enjoyed Les Caves De Roy - the celebrated nightclub at Byblos which has unsurprisingly become the hottest nightspot in Saint-Tropez. It is with the backing of this reputation that Byblos now presents its first compilation - a double album which covers the more laid back 'poolside' vibe as well as the extravagant party atmosphere of the club itself. Both CDs are mixed by the hotels resident DJs and contain a selection of vintage classics such as Pepe Deluxe's 'The Beat Experience', Cordara Orchestra's 'Jet Society' and Arling & Cameron's 'Weekend'. This album sits well alongside series such as Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar, Boudoir Beats etc & Byblos reputation amongst those who aspire to the 'jet-set' life style has been reinforced by recent articles in Vogue, OK!, Town & Country and The Sunday Express.
